July 14th, 2009

Tuesday began with another run, this time at Kezar Stadium for track work. By 6:30 a.m. there were about 100 runners circling the track. There is a rich history behind Kezar, including the original stadium that was home to the San Francisco 49ers for so many years. Currently, Kezar Stadium serves as a popular venue for runners and walkers, high school sports events and amateur and professional soccer matches. As nice a facility as it is, as I ran, I couldn't help but think about all of the potential this site has and what more it could be.

Later in the day, I went to the San Francisco Parks Trust board meeting. The Parks Trust is a non-profit community organization that has supported our parks, recreation centers and open spaces for 38 years. Many of the projects and programs that you see in our parks today could not have been possible without the Trust’s ongoing support. I invite all of you to get involved with your parks today and check out how the Parks Trust is making a difference.

My day concluded with a visit to Miraloma Playground. Recreation directors Lisa Behar and Matthew Schwartz do a fine job with their summer program. I joined some of the kids for some arts and crafts and ping pong, and even had a chance to meet a few of the parents.

Retiring recreation director Jon Greenberg, who lives in the area, happened to stop by during my visit to Miraloma. Jon is probably most known for starting the popular San Francisco Bay Area Summer Pro-Am Basketball League at Kezar, where local high school, college and pro hoops players come each summer to compete. But Jon’s greatest achievement is his work with the kids and families around Potrero Hill Recreation Center, where he spent the bulk of his 47-year career. The department and the city as a whole will definitely miss him.

Did you know? Miraloma Playground is the site of a new Victory Garden.
