Hayes Valley has some really special parks and today I learned why. The community has some incredible leaders who know how to come together (and work together) to make change. Today, I had the pleasure of meeting one of those leaders, Barbara Wenger, in Koshland Park. This is a beautiful park with an amazing community garden. Barbara and her many partners operate Community Grows there, an programs that teaches kids about gardening, nutrition and other life lessons that come about when caring adults take an interest in helping young people. The garden is beautiful, but what is most impressive is Barbara's dedication to the children in Hayes Valley. On the retaining wall the holds the park together, Barbara and her neighbors have created the Peace Wall. It is lined with a collection of ceramic tiles, some made by very talented artists and others made by ordinary people who had something to say. Put together, the tiles form a beautiful piece of public art that is a testament to how a small group of committed neighbors can transform a neighborhood.

Did you know? Koshland Park used to be the site of the Cornwall-Bogart Mansion (built in 1888 and demolished in 1964) and a four story apartment building at 335 Page Street destroyed by arson in 1973. Koshland Park is championed by the Hayes Valley Neighborhood Parks Group which was founded in 1994 to help address substance abuse and crime in Hayes Valley.
