Day 19: New St. Mary's Playgound for Everyone

Saturday, July 25, 2009

Okay, the first thing I have to say about the new St. Mary’s Playground is, you’ve got to try the slide!

More than 200 people, most of them kids, packed into the new District 9 playground on Saturday for the grand reopening of the renovated site. The playground is a state-of-the-art wonderland complete with a climbing wall, swings and a series of decks, bridges and slides.

What’s more impressive about this playground is that it’s fully accessible and inclusive for children with mobility aids. Kids of all abilities have access to the very top of the playground as well as to all of the other play features in the park. This is an important feature that will be incorporated as we continue to plan and design other playgrounds in the future.

This project could not have been completed without the tireless efforts of so many people, including the Mayor, District 9 Supervisor David Campos, former supervisor and current Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, the St. Mary’s Park Improvement Club and the great employees from RPD and DPW.

Also, to those of you who supported our parks through the 2000 (and 2008) Parks Bonds, thank you.

Now, back to that slide. I encourage all of you, the young and young-at-heart, to get out to St. Mary’s and give it a whirl. It really is that good.

St. Mary's Playground is located at Murray Street and Justin Drive, just off of Mission Street in District 9.

Check out this great story from KPIX-5.
