Lawrence Halprin: Landscape Architect (1916-2009)

The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department family extends its sympathies to the family and friends of Lawrence Halprin, renowned landscape architect, who passed away on October 25.
Mr. Halprin's work includes some of the Bay Area's most popular urban spaces, including Ghiradelli Square (1968), Embarcadero Center public spaces (1972) and UC Berkeley's Sproul Plaza (1960). Halprin also designed the renovated Stern Grove in 2005 and collaborated with sculptor Armand Vaillancourt on the Vaillancourt Fountain at Justin Herman Plaza.

My family and I were just out at Stern Grove on October 23 for the Department’s citywide Halloween event, Scare Grove 2009. The event was a huge success and Mr. Halprin’s design work was the perfect backdrop for this and other public events, including the immensely popular Stern Grove Festival that takes place here every summer. (Ok, that fountain definitely NOT being one of my favorites...)
Hats off to Mr. Halprin for his enduring work and creative legacy.
Carnival Night at Pine Lake Day Camp

July 30th, 2009 If you were looking for some old-fashioned summer fun this week, Pine Lake Day Camp’s Carnival Night was the place to be.
Set beneath the majestic trees at Pine Lake Park, next to Stern Grove, Carnival Night brought about an old-school feeling that harkened back to much simpler times. There were carnival games, a dunk tank, an egg toss, carnival treats and a family atmosphere that allowed kids to roam free.
Pine Lake Day Camp remains one of the Department’s most popular camps. Every summer, city kids flock to the camp to enjoy a bit of nature in the city. The camp engenders generational loyalty. Director David Dinslage has been there 20 years and many of his current staff attended Pine Lake as campers.
Pine Lake also is home to a successful inclusion program, which mainstreams autistic children into camp life. Dinslage has spent the better part of the past three decades working with children with various developmental disabilities.
Did you know? In 1973, the cost for a week of day camp at Pine Lake was a whopping $4! Today, the weekly camp fee is $96, still a huge bargain compared to other day camps in the city.

Day 6: A Beautiful Sunday in Stern Grove

There is no better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than enjoying some great music and the Stern Grove festival. Folk legend Joan Baez was in town to perform at picturesque Stern Grove, a 63-acre historic park on the western edge of the city. Folk music and San Francisco just seem to go hand-in-hand; mix in a little sunshine, a great natural setting and an enthusiastic crowd, and you’ve got the makings for a highly memorable, if not transcendent, experience.
The Stern Grove Festival produces a free concert series at the Grove each summer, and each year, music lovers are never disappointed by the impressive and eclectic lineup of musicians the festival organizers have arranged. This year, R&B legend Roberta Flack kicked thing off on June 21, followed by Les Nubians and the San Francisco Symphony in ensuing weeks. Still set to perform this summer are Sergent Garcia, Bollywood superstar Kailash Kher, the San Francisco Ballet and the San Francisco Opera, to name a few. It is this cultural melting pot of music and dance that keeps people coming back for more year after year.
The folks at the Stern Grove Festival, headed by executive director Steven Haines and board President Doug Goldman, are amazing partners. They do a fantastic job of organizing this event each year and the work they perform year-round culminates in what remains one of the city’s most popular attractions.
If you haven’t experienced one of the Festival’s free Sunday concerts yet, or even if you have, I invite you to come out this summer, bring a blanket and a picnic lunch and enjoy the sights and sounds of the Stern Grove Festival. Concerts begin at 2 p.m. each Sunday through August 23. You can find schedules, concert info and directions at http://www.sterngrove.org/. See you there!
