A Rec Connect Tour

Thursday, August 13, 2009

Thursday, August 13th -- The Rec Connect Initiative is a partnership between the Rec and Park Department, the Department of Children, Youth and Their Families (DCYF) and community-based organizations, with the collective mission of providing recreation programs to children in some of the neediest areas of the city.

Today, I visited the five current Rec Connect sites. Here are some pictures from my visits:

Margaret Hayward Playground
Community Partner: Buchanan YMCA.

Jose Coronado Playground
Community Partner: Mission Neighborhood Services

Gilman Playground
Community Partner: Hunters Point Family

The program completed for summer but I talked to NSA manager James Threat, who said the youth here enjoyed some great programming over the summer, and that was evident by all the colorful artwork around the facility.

Gilman is located at the northern tip of Candlestick Park in the Bayview District. It’s one of the toughest neighborhoods in the city but there’s also a very strong community presence here. One neighborhood mom spent the summer cooking healthy lunches for the kids in the program.

Gilman received a makeover in 1999, but there are signs of wear cropping up, including a broken irrigation system on the field.

Excelsior Playground
Community Partner: Mission YMCA

This was a good looking program, run by Julius Bud De Meyer. It used to be housed at Paleaga Recreation Center.

The field at Excelsior was renovated last year, thanks to the San Francisco Giants and the Good Tidings Foundation. Local soccer players respect the no-cleats rule, however, I need my staff to pay a little more attention to the clover patches on this new field.

Also, there is a swing that needs repairing and the planter boxes need sprucing up.

West Sunset Playground
Community Partner: Sunset Beacon Center
