Pedal Power in Our Parks

Sunday, August 2nd

I taught each of my daughters to ride their bikes in Golden Gate Park.

Biking, for both recreation and transportation purposes, has a very strong and loyal following here in San Francisco. Still, we’re always looking for better ways to improve how we live.

This morning I stopped by GGP to visit the Bixi System bike share exhibit, a great example of a public bike share system that has a lot of potential within our own park system. My vision, similar to how Bixi works, would be to rent a bike in GGP and be able to ride it to the Marina Green, Washington Square, McLaren Park or other parks and drop it off there or return it to GGP.

Obviously, there are many advantages to biking, including its benefits to the environment and good health. Here in San Francisco, the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition has long been an effective advocate for more than 10,000 city cyclists. Recently, the Coalition was instrumental in the approval of 45 new bike lanes to city streets.

The Recreation and Park Department will soon be putting out an RFP for more robust bike rental services throughout all our parks.
