Wednesday morning, I toured our Marina with RPD harbor master Larry White. The San Francisco Marina Yacht Harbor is located on the northern waterfront of the city. It is approximately one-and-a-half miles east of the Golden Gate Bridge and is directly west of and adjacent to Fort Mason. The Marina is composed of two harbors, known as the East Harbor and West Harbor, each of which consists of 343 boat slips. The Marina is truly a sight to behold, especially on a clear, sunny day with its breathtaking views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Marin and Alcatraz. Other cities may have a marina, but I doubt few can compete with this view. There are capital improvement projects scheduled in both Harbors, although the East Harbor project is challenged by some environmental issues that still need to be resolved. I am looking to Larry and our recreation staff to add kayaking, canoeing, windsurfing and other bay-sports to our inventory of City sponsored recreational opportunities.
In the afternoon, I visited the “non-fountaining” fountains in the Concourse between the de Young Museum and the Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park with my capital staff. The fountains have been dry for a while now but we are on the verge of beginning a repair effort that should have the fountains spraying by spring 2010. While at the Concourse, we identified a few other projects that need an angel funder or two. Hmmm....
