Cleaning Up the Panhandle and a Soccer Double-Header

Saturday, August 8, 2009

On Saturday morning I ran through GGP and the Panhandle and stopped and met with several District 5 volunteers and Rec and Park staff engaged in a volunteer cleanup in the Panhandle, organized by Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi and the Department of Public Works. In the picture is Joe Padilla, one of Rec and Park's most committed painters and volunteer coordinators.

The Panhandle presents a bunch of unique management challenges for the Department and the city as a whole. It’s in the middle of a major thoroughfare through the city (Fell and Oak streets), bordered by residential neighborhoods on either side. There have also been issues related to homelessness and illegal activities in the park that make it a constant challenge to meet the needs of local families and commuters.

On Saturday, Rec and Park staff helped support the clean up effort at the Panhandle Playground and at Koshland Park among other sites. A special thanks is owed to Supervisor Mirkarimi and several hundred caring neighbors for their efforts this morning.

Saturday night was our big soccer double-header at Candlestick. Many in attendance shared my view that the stadium works great for soccer matches and the field looked superb. Candlestick is often bashed for its conditions, but our grounds crew is a dedicated bunch that doesn’t often get the credit it deserves for keeping the field in tip-top shape, for both the San Francisco 49ers and major sporting events like this one.

Over 60,000 people attended the soccer matches on Saturday night. The Columbus Crew defeated the San Jose Earthquakes 3-0 in the opener and FC Barca and Chivas De Guadalajara tied 1-1 in the thrilling nightcap.

Should we be having more soccer at Candlestick in the future? Definitely.
