We had 15 volunteer projects going on in city parks today and I had the pleasure of visiting four of them. I ventured out with Kristin Bowman, who manages the department's volunteer program, to see the power of volunteers firsthand.

The first stop was Rhododendrum Island in Golden Gate Park where One Brick was hard at work. One Brick, one of the top volunteer organizations in the city, adopted Rhodo Island several years ago and completely transformed the land. What was once a patch of the park overrun with weeds is now a beautiful destination in Golden Gate Park. One Brick is truly an amazing group who make a real commitment to maintain their projects long after they are planted. They work hard and also know how to have fun. I am thinking we need to build a path through the Island to showcase their work.

The next stop was the Rose Garden where volunteers from Wells Fargo were busy tending to the blooming roses. We got there a couple hours into their work and the garden looked amazing. The Wells Fargo volunteers committed to coming back to the garden in a few months to prune the rose bushes. We can't wait to welcome them back.

Then, we moved on to theRhododendrum Dell where Lincoln High School and North Face have teamed up. They come to the Dell once a month to care for it and they do an amazing job. It was fun to see so many young people hard at work in our parks.

The last stop was the Horseshoe Pits where the San Francisco Guardsmen where literally transforming a once blighted corner of Golden Gate Park into what will be a great recreational attraction. The Guardsmen are not only donating their time; They are also generously donating all the materials necessary to restore this site to a place we can all enjoy. When the work is done, the Guardsmen and the San Francisco Horseshoe Pitching Club are teaming up to host a horseshoe tournament. I am looking forward to trying my hand at horseshoes and enjoying the fruits of their labor in September.

Thank you to One Brick, Wells Fargo, Lincoln High School, North Face, the Guardsmen and all of the other groups who were volunteering throughout the city today. It was truly a heart warming experience to see so many volunteers in our parks today. Volunteers are so critical to our parks and expanding our volunteer program is a big priority for me. It was also great to meet all of our knowledgeable gardening staff who were working along side the volunteers and sharing their knowledge of horticulture. I look forward to visiting some volunteer projects on the other side of the city very soon!
