July 9th, 2009

I may have a new favorite park. I have been to Glen Canyon Park several times to watch my daughters play soccer on the athletic field, but today was the first time I ventured up the canyon. What an amazing hidden gem! Lisa Wayne, director of the RPD Natural Areas program, pointed out to me all of the trails that had been refurbished through the hard work of some dedicated volunteers and the trails that are candidates for improvement through the 2008 Clean and Safe Neighborhood bond. It was great to have neighborhood local Bill Wilson along on the hike, who is especially knowledgeable of bond issues. One exciting idea is to link the Glen Canyon trail system to the Twin Peaks trails, producing a lengthy and challenging urban hike. One thing I definitely want to pursue is better signage at all of our trailheads. There are some incredible hikes right here in the city and we need to get more people out by making the trails better known. Peter Brastow of Nature in the City and Craig Dawson of Mount Sutro Stewards joined us too and explained the importance of the native habitat to the wildlife that lives in the canyon. Glen Canyon really is one of the most special places in San Francisco, both to enjoy and protect.
